When was the last time you thought about who trusted you?

With the recalling of unsafe cars apparently known for years to be unsafe by their manufacturers, cases of sexual abuse by priests emerging seemingly without end and with relief money slowly making its way to countries devastated by natural disasters, the question of who we trust is always at the forefront.

I was thinking recently about how amazing, necessary and humbling it is to have the trust of people in my life. Trust is a necessary component for healthy relationships and yet so many people in this time live with the belief that trust is foolish.

Consider this: we often think about whom we don't trust and rehearse those reasons over and over again until those reasons become an ingrained tag line in our minds. However, when was the last time you paused to think about who trusts you, why they do and how their trust in you is to be treasured?

Over the years, in part because of the work I have done as a pastor, I have seen people listen to my ideas, weigh my opinions and trust my words. I am very grateful that my family, friends and colleagues place their trust in me, but I am also humbled and sober-minded that they do. Humbled because I am not perfect, and yet God uses me, and sober-minded knowing that it does not take much to see trust dissipate.

One of our goals this year as a community of believers is to go beyond what has been the norm of doing life together at ICC.  As we venture into this next season of deepening relationships, remember that trust is what we need to truly grow in friendships that go beyond niceties, and so we must be trustworthy.  This means keeping confidences, being authentic, mature and honest.  As we journey forward, I pray God gives us the wisdom and discernment required to increase trust and the courage to go deeper in relationships.
